Ponemon Institute's annual survey reveals data breaches cost companies 2.5 percent more or $202 per compromised record in 2008.
Average losses for businesses were $6.6 million in direct and indirect expenses, according to the survey.
Security breaches impact healthcare and financial service firms more heavily than other firms because consumers expect these organizations to protect their private data.
Ponemon reports that the average healthcare record breach cost organizations $282 per record, while retail sector data breaches cost $131 per record.
Forty-four percent of respondents said they had experienced third-party provider-based data breaches in 2008, up from 40 percent in 2007.
Many data breaches are caused by portable devices, like laptops, and negligence.
